Ada Peter’s Sketches of Old Dublin is a ‘then and now’ look at the City of Dublin from the 17th to 19th centuries. The author writes on many very well-known landmarks of Dublin including Trinity College, Royal College of Surgeons and St. Patrick’s Park but also some perhaps less well known such as the Hell-Fire club and its infamous happenings. This publication is a very enjoyable read and the author clearly admires the city based on how it is written, for example ‘For many hundred years the city proper was cooped up within strong walls protected by many ancient gateways, with narrow streets, “full of people” as Archbishop Ussher tells us it was in his day. For one thousand years has this good town of Dublin held a place in the annals of history and for nearly eight hundred years it has been the capital of Ireland’. This illustrated publication is a great resource for those interested in the social history of Dublin.
