What is inside?

Published in 1901 in conjunction with the Great Augustinian Bazaar, The Gailliv, is a rather unique look at Galway history. Compiled by the Augustinian Fathers and along with the Bazaar it was intended to be a means to raise much needed funds for the repair of the Church of St. Augustine, on Middle Street, in Galway city. The publication was published with the pre-eminent history of Galway, James Hardiman's History of the Town and County of Galway, very much in mind. The preface of The Gailliv remarks that it is in a way to "fill the place of a Part-Supplement" to Hardiman's work. The book is even dedicated to Hardiman, who also laid the foundation stone of the Church of St. Augustine in Galway. The first part of the book deals mainly with the history of the Augustinians in Galway, including Forthill Cemetery, the ancient abbey as well as the nunnery. The second part of the book includes detailed articles on the history of Galway, the corporation, and incidents in the history of the city. The final part of the publication covers the build up to the Great Augustinian Bazaar in August 1901. The Gailliv is also littered with illustrations and photographs of Galway, the Augustinian's themselves, and two wonderful photos of some members of the Ladies and Gentlemen's Bazaar Committees. For any scholars or people with an interest in Galway, this publication is an important addition to the work of James Hardiman and provides an interesting insight into the history of the Augustinian Fathers in Galway.
