Tuesday 22nd August sees our Genealogy Wizard Dr Patrick Roycroft combine his talents for a talk: Geology & Genealogy The Odd Couple.

Ireland’s geology is represented by museum specimens. These specimens have labels with people’s names. Who were these people? Who had Irish minerals and fossils named after them? Genealogy can help.

This talk will tell how genealogy has significantly helped Irish geologists and geology museum curators. It will also introduce the audience to an exciting project in which they themselves can participate in unravelling the lesser-known figures of Irish geology (and related sciences) and so build up a more complete who’s who relating to Ireland’s natural history.

Analysis of whole genomes from the past using ancient Irish DNA. Professor Dan has new information on where and when our ancestors first came to Ireland thousands of years ago.

Dr. Dan Bradley spent his early years on an Irish farm. After a degree in genetics from Cambridge University and PhD in medical genetics from Trinity College Dublin he subsequently started to work on the genetics of each species present on that farm, including Irish humans and has done so for over 20 years. He holds a Personal Chair in the Smurfit Institute of Genetics, Trinity College Dublin, is a member of the RIA and is the holder of an ERC Advanced Grant.
