Genealogy as an academic discipline is rooted in professional level research and is both influenced by and influences its community of practice (practitioners who have a broadly common way of working).
This talk will discuss ways in which genealogy educators can best teach and support students through their journey to become dependable researchers ready to join our community of practice. We will consider what topics courses should teach to be considered credible. For example, citation, using quality sources, ethics and standards of genealogical proof. We’ll ask which you think are important and should not be missed.
How are these topics then developed into a genealogical curriculum and teaching materials? Challenges around developing practical exercises will be focused on and examples will be given from the University of Strathclyde’s MSc in Genealogical Studies and its MOOC (Genealogy: Researching Your Family Tree).
Tahitia McCabe is the course director for the University of Strathclyde's Genealogical, Palaeographic and Heraldic Studies Postgraduate Programme. She is also the lead educator on the Genealogy: Researching Your Family Tree massive online open course (MOOC) offered through FutureLearn.
