Top tip for searching Griffith's Valuation
Here is something that I think will be a help to everyone tracing their family history.
I was recently trying to locate a property in Griffith’s Valuation. I wanted to see who owned a field in the mid-19th century and was trying to match the occupier with the specific lands in question. I then stumbled across the askaboutireland website:
http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/
This gives very detailed and legible maps of Griffith’s Valuation lot holdings that enable you to match the occupier and lot number with their specific holdings. You do seem to have to know the name of the occupier to initiate the search. If you have the name you can then narrow the search down by county, barony, union and parish. It worked for me with just a surname and a parish.

Griffith’s Valuation can also be searched by townland on askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/ Click on “Places” above the search fields. From there you can enter the townland, barony, parish, etc. You can then view the occupants pages from Griffith’s and the maps for that townland.
The problem with the Ask About Ireland maps is that they're from the 1880s/1890s, much later than the original Griffith's Valuation volumes, so they don't match up.
