This podcast explains how to date old family photographs using various techniques, including recognising photographic formats, dating mount styles, researching studios and dating fashion clues. It also covers the kinds of special occasions that prompted our ancestors to visit the photographer, such as marriage, christening and mourning, and offer tips on sharing and caring for family photographs.

 

Biography

Jayne Shrimpton, MA History of Dress is a professional dress historian and photographs/artworks specialist. A former Archivist at the National Portrait Gallery, London, she has been dating and interpreting historical images for nearly 30 years. As a professional consultant, Jayne works with private clients and organisations such as Findmypast. She also lectures widely, writes regular magazine columns and articles on photographs and fashion history, including forIrish Lives genealogy e-magazine, and has published several books.www.jayneshrimpton.co.uk
